New Delhi, May 15, 2012: Union Rural Development Minister Shri Jairam Ramesh said that implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, MGNREGA is not satisfactory in the states like Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha. Replying to a question in the Rajya Sabha, he said, despite poverty and unemployment in the three eastern states, demand for rural job is not so much as in the other well-to-do states.
He said, efforts are being made to strengthen the Gram Panchayats in these states, which is the nodal agency for the implementation of MGNREGA. The Minister further informed that the wage rates for the MGNREGA works have been revised upwards for all the States and Union Territories and is now linked with the Consumer Price Index for Agricultural Labour( CPIAL). A notification to this effect was issued for the period April 1 ,2012 to March 31,2013 and a Statement in this regard was laid in the Lok Sabha last month. The revision indexed to CPIAL would be done annually and the revision would become effective on April 1 each year. (Source: PIB)
