Mumbai: Admissions over, so no RTE quota this year: Schools

Mumbai, May 16, 2012: City schools are caught in a catch-22 situation. The state government’s latest announcement that 25% of the student strength will have to comprise those from weaker and disadvantaged sections from this year itself has caught them off guard.
Since most schools were expecting that the 25% provision will be implemented only from 2013, they did not keep aside seats for poor students.

Centre to go ahead with water supply privatisation move

New Delhi, May 4, 2012: In a controversial move, the UPA government is all set to push for privatising water supply despite severe criticism and fears that this will lead to a massive hike in water consumption charges.


The revised draft National Water Policy (NWP) 2012 states that government’s ‘service provider’ role should end and water supply be privatised under a public-private-partnership scheme.

10,000 solar-based water systems to be installed in Naxal affected districts

New Delhi, May 14, 2012: The Centre today announced that 10,000 solar-based water systems will be installed in the 78 maoist-affected districts to meet the challenges of drinking water scarcity in these areas. Rural Development Minister Shri Jairam Ramesh said here that 540 crore rupees have been earmarked for this project and added that 200 such systems have already been set up in Gadchiroli district in Maharashtra. He was speaking at an international workshop on Greening Rural Development Programmes in India.

The toilet complex, constructed ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, has never been used. It is among the nine prototypes that were built two years ago. The plan was to replicate them across the city.

41% kids underweight in Ahmedabad

Ahemdabad, May 11, 2012: As many as 41% of the children in the state are underweight and 55% of the women between 15 to 45 years of age in the state are anemic. This was revealed in a Rajya Sabha session on Thursday.


Union minister of state (independent charge) for women and child development, Krishna Tirath in Rajya Sabha gave the details of the number of women and children suffering from malnutrition. Tirath was replying to a question posed by Member of Parliament from Jharkhand, Parimal Nathwani.
