Survey of Manual Scavengers Begins in Mandya District, Karnataka

Mandya, Karnataka, May 30, 2013: A survey to identify manual scavengers and their dependents in the district began on Wednesday.
The exercise is aimed at enabling their rehabilitation and ensuring the benefits of various schemes reach them.
Besides identifying dry toilets and open drainage that would entail manual scavenging, volunteers will gather information about the socioeconomic conditions, and health and education status of those still involved in the practice.
A preparatory meeting and a workshop for participants was held at the zilla panchayat auditorium.

Sanitation Drive Gains Momentum in Mysore City

Bangalore, May 28, 2013: Following the dengue deaths in Mysore, the health department of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has taken up sanitisation activities in vulnerable areas.
BBMP health officer Dr Sangamithra told Express, “The department has deputed all junior health inspectors and staff to cover dark zones and conduct fumigation and sanitisation programmes.”
Between June and September, door-to-door inspection will be taken up by the department, she said. “So far, the BBMP has recorded 65 positive cases since January this year.

Anganwadis in Karnataka still lack basic facilities

Bangalore, Apr 15, 2013: Within the four walls of a room that once housed a small shop, B Nagarathnamma, an Anganwadi worker manages to pack 24 children. The children come in at 10 am and spend six hours at this Anganwadi Centre (AWC) in Chikkaballapur. At any point, if the children wish to answer nature’s call, they have to go to the corner of the street, or wait till they got home. Reason? The centre does not have a toilet.
This AWC is just one of the 36,576 AWCs in the state that lacks sanitation facilities, water supply and other essential infrastructure.

Government seeks details of schools defying RTE

Bangalore, Apr 9, 2013: To tighten the noose around private unaided schools not implementing the RTE Act provisions, the education department has asked block education officers to provide information on schools that haven't followed the 25% reservation rule under the Right To Education Act. The circular, dated April 5, 2013, was issued after a number of unaided non-minority private schools refused to admit kids under provisions of the Act.
As per the circular, the admission process started on January 5 and all admissions were supposed to be done by March 15.

Only 7% of schools in the country meet March 31st 2013 RTE deadline

Bengaluru, Apr 1, 2013: Today, the deadline for compliance with the infrastructure requirements of the Right to Education Act expires, but astoundingly, only 7 per cent of schools across the country meet the eligibility criteria. This means that over 3,00,000 private schools across the country are looking at closure once the deadline has passed, according to the Act. This means that nearly five crore students will be out of school.
According to details pub­l­ished by the NGO, RTE Forum, most states will miss the deadline.
