Students in Bihar, UP and Chhattisgarh schools lack basic amenities

New Delhi, March 25, 2012: The tall claims of the state government to provide basic amenities like toilets in schools remains to be far cry. Especially in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh where the drive is facing a tough time. Even, in the national capital, two schools have still not got this facility. 


In Madhya Pradesh, there are at least 32,000 schools which lack basic amenities. Bihar follows closely with 23,000 schools and Uttar Pradesh and Chattishgarh each with 20,000 schools respectively.

Indore Malwa Express becomes first train to have bio-toilet

Indore, April 11, 2012: Indore-Jammutavi Malwa Express (12919/12920) has become the first train of Western Railway to have bio-toilet in its coaches. Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) developed the rack to keep the railway station environment clean for workers working at the tracks. The service will also help to produce minimum waste immersion.

Private toilets for rural women continue to transform lives in Bhopal

Bhopal, April 2, 2012: A new women’s movement has been building in rural India. It’s demanding something never considered before for women who often live in areas without adequate or clean running water. Often these are homes with that have no vented heating or adequate flooring. The demand for decent toilet facilities is  a real and growing concern in a region where many rural women have been left out with no other option than to use the ‘open outdoors’ as their only toilets.

Jairam: Only 10% Indian villages fully sanitized; Award for MP women Who Protested Lack of Toilets

New Delhi, March 19, 2012: Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said that while only 10 percent of Indian villages have full sanitation coverage, the government is dedicated to tackling the issue with both rail and union budgets paying special attention to sanitation.


Speaking at an award function organised by Sulabh International, an organisation working for better sanitation in the country, Ramesh said: "It is sad that out of 2.5 lakh gram panchayats in the country, only 25,000 are "Nirmal" gram panchayats."

State gets a poll-centric budget; sanitary napkins become cheaper due to VAT cut

Apparently keeping the focus locked on assembly elections next year, the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government tabled its 2012-13 budget on Tuesday, largely with no fresh taxes or impositions.


Bristling with many populist sops, the budget also pruned value added tax (VAT) on petrol, besides making substantial allocations to the state's pathetic power sector and to improve its dilapidated roads.

Bhopal Munivipal Corporation (BMC) orders to improve cleanliness in city

Bhopal, Feb 19, 2012: Taking a serious note of city's mounting garbage problem and lack of cleanliness, the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) has transferred deputy health inspector on Saturday and issued orders to improve the cleanliness throughout the city.

Runaway bride awarded for revolting against lack of toilet

Madhya Pradesh, Feb 10, 2012: She was a runaway bride, but she won an award of Rs.5 lakh for revolting against the lack of toilet at her in-laws' place.


Sulabh International, an India-based NGO for environmental sanitation, announced the cash award for newly-wed Anita Bai of a Madhya Pradesh tribal village, describing her as a 'revolutionary of a different kind'. Anita Bai, according to Sulabh, ran away from her in-laws' place on the first night of her wedding to press the issue of lack of toilet there.
