Ban on manual cleaning of sewers: civic body achieves 60% mechanisation

Pune, April 21, 2012: As the Union government plans stringent provision of two-year jail term for civic officials for getting sewers and septic tanks cleaned manually, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has already initiated safety measures for the job and has achieved 60 per cent of mechanisation for the work.
The move in this direction started after The Indian Express in an exclusive series had reported on high mortality rate of conservancy staff in 2007.

Pune Municipal Corporation paints a dirty picture in state

Pune, March 13, 2012: In spite of crores of rupees being spent by municipal corporations and councils in the state on cleanliness and sanitation, none of the cities are clean. And the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), with its budget of Rs90 crore for sanitation, is among the worst.


This has been revealed in a study conducted by the state department of sanitation and water supply.

Girls in 9 districts can now have menstrual hygiene

Pune, March 7, 2012: A union government scheme that offers sanitary napkins at highly subsidized rates to adolescents in nine districts of Maharashtra will roll out in the next few days. It will promote menstrual hygiene and safety from disease among girls in the 10 to 19 age group.

China's 'Occupy men's toilet' drive inspires Pune women

Pune, March 3, 2012: The 'Occupy Men's Toilet' campaign started by women in China to protest against the lack of sanitation facilities for them is beginning to grip the imagination of women in the city.


Activists, working women and college students are now saying that if the 78 newly elected women representatives in the civic house do nothing on the issue, they will launch a similar drive in the city.

Better sanitation infrastructure at school

Pune, Feb 1, 2012: Pune based Kirloskar Foundation has teamed up with Rotary Club of Poona and Stavanger Rotary Club of Norway to build an all new toilet block at Maharashtra Arogya Mandal's Dada Gujar High School at Mohmadwai under a special initiative to improve health and hygiene in schools.


The new toilet block is spread across 650 square feet and will now provide clean water, space for hand wash and toilets for boys and girls. With this now the school will be able to maintain balance between the number of students and requirement of toilets for the same.

Pune Municipal Corporation Sets Aside Rs 71 cr likely for waste management

Pune, Feb 25, 2012: The Pune Municipal Corporation had made a provision Rs 70.94 crore in its 2012-13 draft budget for solid waste management and completion of scientific capping of the landfill site at Urali-Phursungi.


"Solid waste management is the top priority and we hope to complete majority of the capping and related work at Urali Devachi by the end of March 2013," municipal commissioner Mahesh Pathak said.
