Sikkim gets PM's award for excellence in public administration; 87.2% household have access to toilets within their homes in the state

New Delhi, Apr 21, 2013: Sikkim was on Sunday given Prime Minister's award for excellence in public administration for extraordinary and innovate work done for rural development.
The country's highest award for excellence in public administration was presented by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Sikkim's secretary for rural development and management DR Nepal at a function held here on Civil Services Day.
"Sikkim is the only state in the northeast to get this highest award for excellence in public administration for the year 2011-12," an official release said.

GIS mapping to help revamp N-E towns of Shillong, Gangtok; ascertain number of toilets in every house

New Delhi, June 4, 2005: The North-East towns of Shillong and Gangtok are set to get facelifts with the help of scientific mapping. Using tools like comprehensive mapping with geographic information systems (GIS), a $15-mn project funded by the Australian government will work out a model for revamping these two hill towns by November 2005. It is expected that the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will extend a soft loan for implementing urban planning in five NE towns, including Shillong and Gangtok.

Sikkim becomes first state to achieve 100% sanitation

New Delhi, Dec 9, 2008: India still needs to build 78 new toilets every minute over the next four years to meet the government’s ambitious sanitation target under the Nirmal Gram Yojana, or Total Sanitation Campaign


Sikkim, the second smallest state of India, was recently declared a ‘Nirmal State’ for being completely free of open defecation. It was honoured with a gold medal by Indian President Pratibha Patil for setting an example for others states to follow.

Housing Data from Census 2011 released: Sikkim records marked improvement in basic amenities

Gangtok, April 11, 2012: Sikkim has recorded an improvement in the coverage of drinking water, dwelling units, latrine facilities, communication, and lighting according to the Housing Data of the Census of India- 2011 released officially by the Directorate of Census Operations, Sikkim for the State today.
