"Beyond Construction: Use by All" is a collection of case studies from sanitation and hygiene promotion practitioners in South Asia, published in 2008, by WaterAid and the IRC International Water and Sanitation Centre.

Knowledge Links doing CLTS in a Countrywide Program Context

“Doing CLTS in a Countrywide Program Context in India: Public Good v Private Good” written by Nisheeth Kumar and J.P. Shukla published in November 2008 by Knowledge Links, paper examines the adoption and spread of CLTS in India mainly with reference to states of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Maharashtra. The purpose of this inquiry has been to identify factors that help or hinder scaling up of CLTS as an approach to do rural sanitation in India. According to the study the engaged CLTS practitioners convinced about the efficacy of the approach in bringing about faster and more sustainable sanitation results on the ground.

Evaluation of the Environmental Protection and Water Resources Management

Over-exploitation of groundwater resulting in falling water tables in many regions of the country threatens the sustainability of drinking water sources. To address some of these issues, “Evaluation of the Environmental Protection and Water Resources Management Project”, published in 2004 by United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) promoted strategies for Environmental Protection and Water Resources Management (EPWRM), between 1995 and 1998, by supporting demonstration projects in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

National Survey of Rural Community Water Supplies

The National Survey of Rural Community Water Supplies was carried out on behalf of United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) India by the Centre for Symbiosis of Technology, Environment and Management (STEM), Bangalore in 2000. The study conducted by STEM covered the rural areas of nine states, namely, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. This paper discusses the National Survey of Rural Community Water Supplies conducted in rural areas of nine major states of India.

A comprehensive study published by Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR)

Making Sanitation A 'Clean' Habit: Lessons from a School Sanitation Project, is a comprehensive study published by Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR), that outlines the lessons gleaned from the evaluation of a large sanitation project involving 100 schools, largely Zilla Parishad institutions. The project was implemented in 2003 in four districts, Ahmednagar, Beed, Nagpur and Wardha, in the state of Maharashtra , and the evaluation was conducted four years later in 2007

Nightsoil-based biogas plants in Maharashtra

The case study titled “Making nightsoil-based biogas plants viable in Maharashtra’s Pune district” has been written by Dr. S V Mapuskar in India Infrastructure Report, published in 2007 by United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). It presents Dehu village of Maharashtra’s Pune district, where some families allow their neighbours to use their toilets for a nominal maintenance charge making attached biogas plants economically viable. The strategy has also eased the village Panchayat’s responsibilities for human nightsoil management and reduced environmental pollution due to open defecation.

Community involvement and waste water management

“Community involvement makes waste water management a success story in a Maharashtra village” has been written Dr. S V Mapuskar in India Infrastructure Report, published in 2007 by United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). The case study presents the Dhamner village in Satara district of Maharashtra is an example of a success story to undertake measures to manage individual and community waste water with the goal of a cleaner and healthier village.
