“Community-designed, built and managed toilet blocks in Indian cities", is an article by Sundar Burra, Sheela Patel and Thomas Kerr, published in the Environment & Urbanization Vol 15 No 2 on October 2003. This paper describes the ten-year programme of community-designed, -built and -managed toilet blocks undertaken by urban poor federations and women's cooperatives, with support from the Indian NGO SPARC.

Nightsoil-based biogas plants in Maharashtra

The case study titled “Making nightsoil-based biogas plants viable in Maharashtra’s Pune district” has been written by Dr. S V Mapuskar in India Infrastructure Report, published in 2007 by United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). It presents Dehu village of Maharashtra’s Pune district, where some families allow their neighbours to use their toilets for a nominal maintenance charge making attached biogas plants economically viable. The strategy has also eased the village Panchayat’s responsibilities for human nightsoil management and reduced environmental pollution due to open defecation.

"The Sendriya Shouchalaya: A Urine-diversion Dehydration Toilet experience from Kuran village, Maharashtra, India", is a photo-essay, describing the setting up and operation of an eco-san toilet in a remote village in Maharastra. The toilet was set up by Sourabh Phadke, an architect from Pune, in collaboration with the owners, Bhau and Kadubai.
