Tiruchirapalli: Children in government school suffer for want of toilets

Tiruchirapalli, May 20, 2014: The poor sanitation facilities in various government schools is causing concern among children and parents.

Although the basic infrastructure in schools has improved over the years, the bad condition of sanitation facilities suggests that there is a big mismatch between the number of children and the actual infrastructure. Some schools do not have toilets at all. And where there is one, it is not cleaned at all.

The condition of the Government Higher Secondary School at Thogamalai near here has been cited as an example for the poor state of affairs as far as sanitation is concerned. Although the school has a large number of children hailing from Kazhuhur, Kalladai, Pathiripatty, Porambalur and surrounding villages, has reasonable number of toilets, they have become useless.

Residents of Thogamalai say it has been taken to the notice of officials’ concerned to set right the issue no steps have been taken so far.

“It is one of the biggest schools in the region. It is pitiable. Not much attention is made to maintain the sanitary facilities. There is not even two-week left for reopening the schools. The authorities should take steps to solve the issue,” said a local resident of Thogamalai.

He said the district administration should carry out a survey about the condition of sanitation facilities in the district and take steps to improve the facilities. (Source: C. Jaisankar, The Hindu)
